Alumni spotlight: Kevin Rutter '97

Kevin Rutter '97 has been named Illinois Teacher of the Year. Rutter was one of four EIU graduates up for the award. Christopher A. Koch, the state superintendent of education, ultimately chose Rutter for demonstrating a "true understanding of the needs of his students."

"When I'm teaching, it's almost like I step out of the person I am in real life and become a performer," Rutter told the Chicago Sun-Times. Read more here.

Vote for Coach Spoo!

If you agree with us that EIU football coach Bob Spoo deserves Liberty Mutual's Coach of the Year Award, which recognizes that "how you win is every bit as important as winning itself," please vote!

The winning coach in each division will receive $50,000 to donate to charity and a $20,000 grant for his school's alumni association to enhance student scholarships and activities.

Next year, we will host an on-campus reunion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of WEIU. If you're a former WEIU radio or TV staff member, mark your calendar for Homecoming 2010 (Oct. 22-23) and watch for details in your mailbox this summer.   • The College of Education and Professional Studies is seeking nominations for the 2010 CEPS Alumni Awards.
  • The Legacy Scholarship is awarded each fall to an EIU freshman who is the child and/or grandchild of an EIU graduate. The application deadline is Feb. 11.
  • Volunteering at commencement is a rewarding opportunity to give back by ensuring it's a great day for graduates and their families. If you'd like to help during the fall ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 19, please contact Jonathan McKenzie at jrmckenzie@eiu.edu or 217-581-6338.
